Motobike

Some good to know when you decide to rent a motobike.

From beginning of 2016 the prime minister of Cambodia had a gift to its people. No longer do you need to get a licence for riding A1 motobikes (up to 125cc).

Quote: "there is no need to learn how to drive a motorbike since driving a motorbike is not difficult " Hun sen, Cambodias prime minister.

Its much about youths and students not beein able to afford to get one.

However this dont stop the police from stoping you trying to make a few extra dollars.

They will start talk with you and say that the rules here are different and end up asking if you want to go to the policestation with them. This is where you are expected to pay up some cash.

Keep in mind that the fee for driving without licence in Cambodia is 1$ so thats what you should give. If they dont give up you can allways pay 1$ extra but then you payed 100% to much.

Other things:
Dont try look cool by driving without helmet. I often see old men diving without helmet even tho its hanging there on the handle while they driving.

The life expectancy of expats living in Cambodia is 29 years less then in their home countrys.

Driving without a helmet is not going to contribute to prevent that low expectancy. And allso the crooked policeofficers will get dollarsigns in their eyes when they see you.

You are not insured while driving. If you cause a accident you will have to pay up youself. If you completely destroy the moto you will pay for a new one youself.

Even if the traffic is a little driffrent from back home i dont consider it beein so hard to drive here in Cambodia as long as you get the same mindset as the khmer themself but perhaps beein a little bit more observant and careful. However if you are not used to allot of trafic and maby one of those who allways forget to check your blindspot, easily confused and scared of trafficsituations you might not have a good time driving in the citys.

Trafficrules seem to be taken more as recommendations then actual laws. Red light, one way, right side, left side.....People drive through and against anything. Slow down when you go through a intersection even if you have green light.
